Wrist and Hand Surgery Instruction

After your wrist or hand surgery, keep your arm elevated above your heart's level to prevent swelling. You can use a pillow or some other support when you are sitting or lying down and hold it up when you are standing. Do this for at least three days after surgery. Make sure to exercise your fingers if possible. Apply ice to your wrist/hand for the first couple of days after the surgery to help reduce swelling. Keep your bandage dry using a waterproof plastic bag and hairdryer.

Take your pain medication as needed with food. Follow the instructions given in your prescription. Do not wait until the pain becomes severe before you decide to take medication.
