Elbow Surgery Instructions

After your elbow surgery, keep your arm in the sling at all times. Only take your arm out of the sling to bend and straighten your elbow a few times a day. Make sure to squeeze and open your hand as often as you can. Apply ice to your elbow for the first couple of days after the surgery to help reduce swelling. Keep your bandage dry by using a waterproof plastic bag and hairdryer.

Keep your arm elevated above the level of your heart to prevent swelling. You can use a pillow or some other support when you are sitting or lying down and hold it up when you are standing. Do not depend on the sling because this puts your arm below the level of your heart. You usually only need to do this for two to three days.

Take your pain medication as needed with food. Follow the instructions given on your prescription. Do not wait until the pain becomes severe before you decide to take medication.

Remember to schedule a post-operation visit for a checkup and to obtain further instructions from the doctor.
